The Arab Student Association is a space for both Arab students and non-Arab students interested in Arab culture and the Arabic language to meet and experience Arab culture through weekly meetings and large Arab Student Association-sponsored events each semester. Our weekly meetings typically consist of updates about the club, Arab news, and casual discussion while our larger biannual events consist of celebrating Arab culture through hosting a large Arab dinner party with Arab food and music for all who attend. We are also planning to host more medium-sized events this upcoming year such as monthly Arab movies nights where the club gets together to watch and discuss Arab films. Additionally, depending on the COVID-19 situation, we hope to host small excursions to the Arab bakery and other places in Richmond to explore the Arab influence locally. All students interested in the Arab world, regardless of ethnicity or area of studies, are welcome. Reach out to me by email if you have any questions. Welcome to UR BARK Club! Our goal as an organization is to volunteer at local Richmond animal shelters. We are currently working with three different shelters, including the Richmond SPCA, Richmond Animal Care and Control, and the Hanover Humane Society. Two of the shelters, Richmond Animal Care and Control and the Richmond SPCA, also have a running program where you can go on runs with the dogs!

Most students volunteer every other week, but depending on which shelter you volunteer at you can go as often as you'd like! Volunteers without cars are matched with other Richmond students who have cars depending on their availability so that everyone has a mode of transportation to the shelter. We also host fundraising events to raise money and awareness for shelter animals in need. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. We look forward to having you join the club!

Choeur du Roi (Chords), founded in 1995, is the University of Richmond's oldest all-gender a cappella group. "Choeur du Roi" means "Choir of the King" in French and is pronounced like corduroy pants, which we all wear at our major performances. We've performed at multiple events for crowds of hundreds across the east coast and recorded several CDs. Most importantly, our collective passion for music and group chemistry bring us together and make Chords feel like a family. Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society was founded in 1920 to encourage and recognize superior achievement in the study of government and politics at the undergraduate and graduate level. Pi Sigma Alpha is the only honor society for college and university students of government and political science in the United States. The University of Richmond’s Beta Xi chapter was founded in 1953.

To be selected, a student must have completed the following academic requirements:
(1) Six units in political science at UR;
(2) Three units of which must be at the 300 or 400 level;
(3) Overall GPA of 3.3; and
(4) Overall GPA of 3.5 in the major.

UR Relay for Life is committed to raising awareness and money for the American Cancer Society. We host fundraisers throughout both semesters and a large event in the spring (the Relay) with cancer survivors, speakers, and participants. At the event, teams of students and faculty members come together to play games, eat at food trucks, listen to cancer survivors, and walk around the track for hours in hopes to honor those who have lost their lives to cancer and raise money to find a cure for those currently suffering.

Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) supports Latino/a/x high school students with college access through rigorous academic challenge, leadership development, scholarships, and supportive mentorships. The organization pairs current UR students with Latinx high school students from the Richmond City area. This mentorship goes beyond supplemental academic help because UR students are prepping these students for college and beyond. Led by Dr. Kaufman in the Jepson Leadership School, SLI has helped Latinx students keep their passion for learning and continue their education at a four year university or junior college. SLI is open to any UR student that is motivated to shape the new generation of Latinx leaders in the Richmond area. Mentors do not have to be Latinx, and Spanish is not required.

How does our program benefit the university?

We build a community of students who care about a diverse set of social issues in fields such as healthcare, education, politics, economics, and the environment and provide them with an experience that allows them to work alongside the communities who are impacted by these issues. The students are ambassadors of the University of Richmond and bring their experiences in various communities around the United States back to our campus community in the form of conversations and actions. Our mission is to reveal the complexity of the issues plaguing communities in the regions we visit. We are then able to return to campus with a more holistic understanding that we can share with our friends and classmates in an effort to foster dialogues and movements around the issues we explore.

In addition, each year since 2011, we have produced a professional journal publication as a way to compile all of our participants’ final reflections from their trip experiences. We share this journal with our participants, their families, our community partners, donors, and our campus community at large.

UR Smash is a club focused on the Nintendo video game Super Smash Bros, currently Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. We are open to both casual and competitive players and aim to be a welcoming community on campus where students can come to relax and unwind from the stress of college. The Messenger showcases student work in Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction, Visual Arts, and Translation. Each fall semester, students are invited to submit their work for publication in the spring. The Messenger Staff conducts a blind review of every submission, putting together a free, student-designed book for the campus community. After publication, the Messenger Staff hosts a release party and an award ceremony for two cash prize winners in Poetry and Prose.
